ProECU update August 2026
Introduction
As of August 24th 2026 a new version of ProECU is set for release with a range of important updates. For most users the changes will be seamless but there are some important changes that need to be understood, especially for tuners with multiple dongles or tuners sending files to subdealers and end users.
Key differences in update
New version of ProECU updated to support firmware and file format updates
Updated .rom file format, now used by all ecu types, no more .bin files
Updated RaceROM patches for most ECU types
Updated stock rom files, old .bin files replaced by .rom files, and existing .rom files updated
New updated EVI (Ecutek Vehicle Interface) firmware for both USB and BT units
New updated EBP (EcuTek bench Programmer) firmware
Original Green CANbus cable (made by Sense Solutions) no longer supported for any programming
New versions of ProECU will only program with updated interface firmware
New interface firmware will only work with new versions of ProECU
The new version of ProECU will not run on virtual machines on a PC or Apple Mac (both Intel and Apple Silicon)
The new version of ProECU will not run if it detects software engineering tools are running, such as Visual Studio, Delphi, IDA etc.
Why
Some updates are required to support new, as yet unreleased platforms
Some updates are required for future EcuTek cloud functionality
File format updates improvs flexibility on older platforms still using the .bin format
Moving older platforms to the newer format saves significant disc space
The whole package of updates gives EcuTek more flexibility in future for storing additional info in .rom files
Updates to ProECU required to accommodate the various under-the-hood changes were significant, making it a one-way change that also requires hardware updates (via firmware updates).
What to know if you’re a tuner
Update your ProECU as normal with EcuTek Update from the help menu in ProECU.
Your updated ProECU will require the EVI firmware to be updated prior to flashing an ECU (with the exception of 99-00 Subaru, 01-04 Subaru and Mitsubishi Evo 5-9 that continue to use their specific black interface cables).
If you have multiple dongles, subdealers or retail customers, be aware that files created with the new ProECU will not be usable on older versions of ProECU. You will need to make sure your sub-dealers and retail customers have updated their copy of ProECU if you are sending them files made with the new ProECU and or their ECU Connect Interface firmware.
Additional measures for tuners with multiple dongles
If you use a primary dongle for editing new rom files and additional dongles for programming in the workshop and other sites, or, if you send files to sub-dealers or retail users, all those other installations of ProECU will also need updating.
Once updated, it will also only work with the latest EVI firmware, so we recommend updating all your active EVI devices.
We recommend taking time out to do a planned update of ProECU for on-site dongles and interfaces, and then advise any customers you plan on sending new tuned rom files.
What to do as a retail kit user
If you get a new .rom file from your tuner saved with the updated ProECU, you will also need to update your ProECU and the Interface firmware.
Update your ProECU using EcuTek Update from the help menu, click on “Update Software” in the Ecutek Update dialog box.
Update your EVI firmware from the Hardware pulldown menu in ProECU, select “Interface Firmware Update”.
What to do as a PhoneFlash user
If you get a new flash file from your tuner that was created using the latest version of ProECU, you will need to update the firmware of your EVI-BT before being able to flash it. You will need a main firmware version of 5.0 or later, and you can follow the EVI-BT firmware update guide: Updating your ECU Connect Vehicle Interface
